Professor Andrew Phelps
BioProfessor Andrew Phelps is the Director of Game Design & Development at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. He is the founding faculty member of the Masters of Science in Game Design & Development within the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, as well as the Bachelors of the same name.His work in games programming education has been featured in The New York Times, CNN.com, USA Today, National Public Radio, IEEE Computer, and several other articles and periodicals. Dr. Phelps regularly publishes work exploring collaborative game engines and game engine technology. Andrew's website featuring his work as an educator, artist, programmer, and game addict, and currently teaches courses in multimedia programming, game engine development, 2D and 3D graphics, and game development theory. Primary research interests include online gaming, electronic entertainment, 3 dimensional graphics and real time rendering, virtual reality, interactive worlds. Abstract for the TalkIn this talk, Professor Andrew Phelps will present a model based on his experience over the last decade as the founder of the Game Design & Development programs at the Rochester Institute of Technology as well as the Department of Interactive Games & Media, also at RIT. The talk will specifically address the explosion of games studies over the last few years in academia, and how this has impacted education in fields ranging from traditional Computer Science and the Sciences in general, to the Arts and Humanities. Furthermore, the talk will explore the intersection of real-time interaction, socialization, exploration, and learning prevalent in game play, with a situational grounding in cognitive and collaborative learning theory, and with particular emphasis on the importance of using tools and techniques to provide an interesting, relevant, and fun way for students, faculty, and researchers to learn and gain appropriate skills for their field(s) of study and subsequently enrich their own work. Several real-world examples will be presented as case-studies drawn from the speaker's experience. Examples will be both technical and non-technical in nature. |
